“Ahhh Jess… my child runs to the road… how can I help them?”

(Featuring my sister-in-law Tracey as my toddler😂…)

Okkkk, as a therapist plus mom of three, I do know this doesn’t usually end up with you and your children hopping into the sunset together 😂…

But stick with me…

First off, when a child runs to the road, the NUMBER ONE thing is always safety.

Holding their hand tight, carrying them, or keeping them in their stroller to keep them safe even if they are upset about it is OK!

Second is teaching something new. We want to give them a YES, something they can do instead of running to the road, whether this is holding your hand, hopping like a frog on sidewalk, or buckled up in the stroller.

Sometimes your child will like this (like Tracey did in the video). Other times they may be mad about it. In both cases all feelings are ok AND their safety comes first.

Third, this is not a quick fix solution. Learning to trust a parents boundary is a skill. Learning what to do instead of running to the road is a skill. Skills take time to develop. It may take time and practice (and explaining why the road is unsafe) but with curiousity and consistency eventually your child will learn.❤️

Update: Yes, I mention I forgot to feed my child breakfast in this reel. This is real life gentle parenting with three little kids. I share the reality because I know I can’t be the only mom who has done this. ❤️
